Exodus 19 – GOING UP & DOWON THE MOUNTAIN by Rev. Sharon Wooten

Read verses 1-6

  • Moses decided to get away and go up the mountain. Somehow in the busyness of the day, Moses’ gaze moved upward.  Cause my gaze to be upward, Lord.  Moses had a heart to seek God.  He had heard the voice of the Lord before.  There is nothing like hearing the voice of the Lord.  He was hungry for God’s presence.
  • God called to him from the mountain. We need ears to hear the voice of God!  Lord, clear out my ears to hear Your voice above all voices.  Separate yourself to be with Him.
  • We need an encounter with God today. Chaos everywhere.  Need to get to a place to hear.
  • It is not in our praying many words or in our loudness but in our heart that is hungry.
  • Jeremiah 29:13 13 And you will seek Me and find Me,when you search for Me with all your heart.
  • God is still calling for our whole hearts. He is looking for people who will surrender everything to Him.  Are we willing to give up everything for Christ? Nothing to have priority over Christ.  Verse 14 says that when make seeking Him our priority then “I will be found by you says the Lord…”
  • Am I seeking Him with all my heart? SURRENDER TO GOD.  The best way to pray is to ask God to stir hunger in your heart for Him.  Help, me Lord to give you all of myself.
  • God always has a purpose in His encounter with us.
    1. Fellowship,
    2. Instruction,
    3. Insight into the future.
  • Verse 4 – REMEMBER how I delivered you. “…I bore you on eagles wings and brought you to Myself.” Such a beautiful picture of the Lord delivering with ease but with the purpose of intimacy.
  • In verse 5 God begins to reveal the Children of Israel’s destiny and purpose. “IF” – means there is a condition to the benefits. “If you will… then I will….”
    1. Hear the Voice of God. Then obey what I say.  Obedience to God always, always brings reward.
    2. Keep my Covenant – An agreement of loyalty and obedience to God.
  • The Benefits Will Be: God is now revealing and speaking to the reason they were created.  It was their original design.
    1. You shall be a special treasure to Me above all people.
    2. You shall be a Kingdom of Priests. God wants them to understand His priority for them to worship. A Kingdom of Priests worshiping as a nation before God.
    3. Jesus died for us today to become a Kingdom of Priests. Revelation 1:5,6 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.”
      • This is still God’s desire today. We, as the saved of the Lord, are a Kingdom of Priests; a Holy nation (people) before the Lord.
      • If believers everywhere would gather together to worship God without an agenda. Worship is not a service.  Worship begins with individual hearts that are surrendered and who desire God’s presence above everything else.  It is not worshipping because we just want a good feeling at church or not just because we want God to give us what we want.  If we would worship simply because we want to honor God we would become that nation of priests ministering to Him and He will come near. Worship is a longing for intimacy with God.
      • Worship is such a powerful tool. I believe worship, worship from an adoring heart can bring victories from the Lord simply because He comes near to the praises of His people.
      • Worship as a Holy nation of Priests was their foundation for all their future victories. It would bring them the Promise of the Land to come.
    4. And shall be A Holy Nation – A people set apart from the world consecrated to the Lord worshipping Him as a nation.
      • God calls us to be a Holy People before Him. We are called to surrender ourselves fully to Him.
      • We are called to die to our wants and wishes and to surrender to the purposes of God.
      • We have cheapened Christianity to seeking God only to get what we want.
      • I am alarmed at people who post verses on facebook one day and the next day are using such profanity and posting pictures of drunken parties the next. Where is our fear of God?
      • If someone starts talking about Holiness these days people immediately think they are legalistic. Hebrews 12:14 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
    5. God is telling them that He wants to give them victory and a land of their own. Their restored their rule from owning nothing as slaves to Kingdom identity and possession comes out of their walk before God in worship as a Kingdom of priests.

Exodus 19:8 The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.” So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.

  • Obedience has to be more than just words. They said they would obey but they did not.

Ecclesiastes 5:5 “It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.”

Exodus 19: 9 The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.” Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.

  • God will honor His servants who honor Him.
  • He will give them favor among the people.
  • But people who do not honor God will not honor the man of God.

Read Verses 10-13

God was about to reveal Himself in all His glory and power to speak personally to the children of Israel.

  1. They had heard that He spoke to Moses but they had not heard Him speak to them directly.
  2. God’s presence is serious business.Don’t be too familiar with the things of God.  Respect God’s holiness.  We cannot treat the things of God like other things.  Yes, we have access to the presence of God through the Holy Spirit but He is still to be respected.
  3. The Children of Israel began to Prepare for the visitation.
    1. Consecrate: make or declare sacred; dedicate formally to a religious purpose. Moses was to declare to the people that they were to be a kingdom of priests; a holy nation.
    2. Wash your clothes. Clean up and get ready.
    3. Be ready.
    4. Don’t touch what I say don’t touch.

Why would God make these stipulations? Was He trying to scare them?  No.  They had taken His deliverance and presence for granted.  Grumbled and complained with the cloud of His presence right there.  Honor my presence.  Respect My Presence.

Verse 14 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives.”

  • You’ve got to go up in the mountain of the Lord’s Presence, but you can’t stay there. You’ve also got to come down and be among the people.
  • The mountain experience prepares you for the people.

What would we do if we got a message that God was coming in three days?
